Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

Images in our minds create triggers that can provoke physical and emotional symptoms. What if you could eliminate those troubling images? What if you could remove the source of distress that leads to the domino effect of negative feelings such as panic and anxiety? I can help you do just that, and quickly—often in just 1 to 4 sessions—with Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART).

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?

ART is a short-term therapy that uses guided eye movements and imagery to change how your brain stores distressing memories. Instead of telling the whole event in detail, we focus on the images that keep causing problems and replace them with positive or neutral images. Unlike traditional therapies, ART can lead to tangible results in fewer sessions and is specifically designed to alleviate the burdens experienced by anyone, particularly those in high-stress, high-trauma exposure professions like first responders. The goal of ART is to minimize distressing symptoms and bodily sensations by replacing disturbing images with pleasant ones.

Why ART for First Responders?

  • Fast: Many people feel much better after one session; most finish in 1–4 sessions.

  • Focused: We target the images that cause symptoms—no long retellings.

  • Practical: ART reduces nightmares, panic, hypervigilance, and avoidance so you can get back to being you.

(See article for more information: Theoretical Rationale for Selection of Accelerated Resolution Therapy for Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in VA and DoD Facilities, Military Medicine, Volume 183, Issue 9-10, September-October 2018, Pages e314–e321, https://doi.org/10.1093/milmed/usy027

When is ART a Good Option?

  • If you are motivated and seeking an effective resolution to distressing symptoms.

  • If traditional therapy methods have not provided the results you need.

  • If you have a very specific thing you'd like to target and want to minimize the number of therapy sessions required.

Can My Child Do ART?

I provide ART sessions to children who can sit and tolerate talk therapy.

What Can ART Treat?

ART has been successfully used with clients dealing with a variety of distressing issues. More common challenges for which people seek ART include:

  • Trauma symptoms (nightmares, intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, panic attacks, etc.)

  • Challenging experiences causing distress

  • Images you'd like to get rid of

  • Phobias

  • High anxiety

  • Grief/complicated grief

Is ART the Same as EMDR?

No. ART and EMDR share some ideas about memory processing, but ART focuses on replacing images and is set up for faster change—often in 1–4 sessions. EMDR usually takes more sessions and asks the client to discuss greater details about events aloud.

What to Expect?

  • 60 minute intake: I get to know what brings you in and we identify the specific issue and goals.

  • ART session: 60–90 minutes of guided eye movements and imagery work focused on those images.

  • Follow-up: Together we will determine the best next step. Many clients notice immediate relief. You’ll get practical tips to keep improving.

Real Results From Real Clients (anonymized)

  • Recently retired first responder with recurring images from child-death calls: images and distress removed after one session.

  • Active first responder involved in a critical incident developed some anxiety and avoidance symptoms impacting work tasks: symptoms eased completely after one session.

  • Military veteran with flashbacks triggered by loud noises lasting decades: after ART they no longer react to loud sounds, surprising themselves and family.

  • Adults who removed painful childhood images.

  • Post-partum mother reducing extreme anxiety following traumatic birth after one session.

  • People with intense fears reduced to healthy levels of concern.

Common Feedback from Clients:

  • "I wish I did that a lot sooner."

  • "I feel so much lighter."

  • "You're going to put yourself out of business with such rapid results."
